Mixed Reality
The Challenge:
Virtual Reality offers unmatched immersion, but traditionally creates two major museum headaches: it’s an isolating, single-player experience, and it can cause massive queue bottlenecks in busy galleries.
Unearthed VR
The Solution:
We transformed VR into a high-energy, social team challenge. By designing a asymmetric two-player experience, we gave both the headset wearer and the observer equally vital roles, turning passive waiting into active, collaborative play.
To eliminate interactive intimidation, we leaned into narrative onboarding. We wrote a cinematic script for Front of House (FOH) staff to deliver, instantly transforming visitors into an elite team with a high-stakes mission:
The Script:
“Players, you are paleontologists tasked with discovering as many fossils as possible before a massive storm washes them away forever. We have exactly three and a half minutes.
- Player 1 (The Digger): You’re going into the virtual trench. Put on that visor—you are our hands on the ground.
- Player 2 (The Machine Operator): Step up to the terminal. You are the brains and the Digger’s lifeline. Watch the signal: when it hits 100%, it’s time to dig!
Work as one mind. Your time starts now.”
Built for Smooth Gallery Operations:
- Crowd Control: By capping the gameplay at a strict, narrative-driven 3.5 minutes, we eliminated bottlenecks. Visitors are highly willing to wait when they know exactly when their 5-minute turn cycle begins.
- Staff-Empowered Tech: The entire system runs on a discrete local computer managed by pre-programmed smart plugs. Floor staff can power the entire exhibit up or down with a single switch.
- The Facilitator Advantage: We advocate for staff-facilitated VR. Having a team member onboard players doesn’t just protect the hardware—it weaves the staff into the exhibition’s storytelling, dramatically elevating the visitor experience.
The Result:
A highly efficient, deeply memorable VR installation that converts a notoriously isolating technology into a spectator-friendly, team-building highlight of the gallery.
